2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Southside completed the 2016 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region three, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Southside's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Montevallo by a score of 45-18. The Panthers improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2009. The Panthers won as many games as in any season since 2004. It marked the first time since the 2005 season that the Panthers qualified for the playoffs. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2003 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Panthers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Flowers saw improvement as they won seven games following a 2-8 record in 2015. Since 2010, Southside has gone a combined 21-50. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Southside has not won much with a record of 89-174. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 3A and 329th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Daniel Flowers who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-34 over the past five seasons at Southside. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Flowers. Coach Flowers' overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 17-34 (33.3%). The Southside Panthers will play in Class 3A region three during the 2017 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season. Unfortunately, Southside finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Selma on Friday, September 1 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Selma Saints finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 6A region four. The Saints closed out the regular season with a loss to Stanhope Elmore by a score of 42-36. Southside and Selma have met a total of 41 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 9-32-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2016 with Southside winning by a score of 24-18. Southside returns 3A All-State Senior defensive back Edward Moore. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
